Parliamentary briefing with Dr Husam Zomlot, Palestinian Head of Mission

On Tuesday 10 June 2025, LDFP hosted a briefing for Liberal Democrat MPs and Peers with the Head of the Palestinian Mission to the UK, Dr Husam Zomlot. The discussion focused on the current situation in Gaza, the UK’s international legal obligations, and the urgent case for UK recognition of a Palestinian state.

Dr Zomlot stressed that the UK cannot claim to uphold international law while continuing to arm a state committing mass atrocities. The government is legally obliged to prevent a plausible genocide, which means implementing a full arms embargo and comprehensive sanctions. Limited measures against a handful of Israeli ministers, he argued, are nowhere near sufficient when annexation, settlement expansion, and mass displacement remain official policy.

Dr Zomlot also made a compelling case for immediate UK recognition of Palestine, framing this as both a moral imperative and a legal duty. Recognition is not simply symbolic, but a necessary step towards addressing structural inequalities and upholding three inalienable rights of the Palestinian people: the right to self-determination, the right to equality, and the right of return.
