On 24 June, Layla Moran laid a Private Members’ Bill to ban trade in goods and services with Israel’s illegal settlements in the West Bank. The bill was supported by Calum Miller (Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson), Alex Sobel (Labour), Kit Malthouse (Conservative) and Ellie Chowns (Green).

The bill would move the UK’s position beyond advisory guidance and establish a clear legal prohibition on commercial dealings with Israeli settlements.

Due to Layla’s position in the Private Members’ Bill ballot, MPs will not have the opportunity to debate or vote on the bill. Nevertheless, it stands as an important demonstration of cross-party support at a time when the government is facing increasing pressure to ban settlement trade.

Layla has repeatedly put forward Private Members’ Bills on Palestine, tabling a Palestine Recognition Bill in every parliamentary session until this year.
