Anti-Arab Racism in Israel and Elsewhere

FRINGE MEETING AT THE AUTUMN CONFERENCE

SUNDAY 5 OCTOBER, 2014 AT 6.15PM

CAMPANILE, PICASSO 2

Racism is a continuing problem in many countries. It is a feature of the Palestine/Israel conflict. Palestinians are being demonised by right wing Israelis who seem to regard Arabs as an inferior race. Jews in many countries are experiencing anti-Semitism again, in part because of a reaction of the perceived cruelty of Israel towards its Palestinian subjects and neighbours. Arabs in the West are on the receiving end of prejudice arising from the maverick activities of Islamist terrorists in the Middle East and in Europe.

We have invited three speakers to address these issues, focussing especially on Anti-Arab Racism.

John Hemming MP will chair the meeting.

Chris Doyle is the Executive Director of CAABU – the London based Council for Arab British Understanding.

Ruth Edmonds represents ICAHD – Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. She has lived in Israel for 16 years and campaigns against the destruction of Arab homes in Israel, East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Malaka Mohammed is a 23-year-old Palestinian refugee, whose family ended up in Gaza after being forced to flee their ancestral home in Jaffa. She is a Sabbatical Officer of the University of Sheffield Students’ Union who took her first degree at the Islamic University of Gaza before moving to Sheffield in 2013.

This is a public meeting open to Lib Dem Conference delegates and others.
